Stopping the water
Isolating the failed section so the rest of the house can be turned back on. Sometimes that is a fixture valve, sometimes the whole main, depending on where the break sits.
A pipe that has let go can empty a lot of water into a house in a few minutes. Shut the water off if you safely can, then call Dallas 24 Hour Plumber to reach an independent plumber who can find the break and repair the line properly rather than patch it.
If water is still coming out, the first job is stopping it. Most Dallas properties have a shutoff at the water meter box in the parkway by the curb, and many houses also have a valve near the water heater or where the line enters the building. Turn off the water heater's gas or breaker as well, but only if you can reach the control easily and without standing in water.

Not every job needs every item below. Ask the plumber to separate the emergency repair that stops the water from the follow-up work you may want to plan later.

Water runs along joists and inside wall cavities, so the wet spot rarely marks the pipe. The access hole gets cut where the failure is, not where the stain is.
Copper, CPVC, PEX and old galvanized pipe each need different fittings and methods. If the same run has failed more than once, replacing it usually beats repairing it again.
The repair is pressurized and checked before the water goes back on for good, and you are shown what was replaced and where the shutoffs are.
What drives the cost of a burst pipe repair is where the pipe is and what it is made of. A split under a sink is an easy reach. A line in a slab, a second-floor wall or an attic in August is not. Older galvanized supply lines that have corroded from the inside are often better replaced along a whole run than repaired at one point, because the next failure is usually already forming. Ask for the options and the price before anything is cut.
Freeze damage is its own category in North Texas. The February 2021 storm broke pipes all over Dallas, mostly in attics, garage walls, outside faucets and unheated additions, and a single cold snap can do the same to a run that was never insulated. If a freeze is why you are here, ask the plumber to point out the other exposed sections while they are on site.
If the water loss was slow rather than sudden, leak detection may be the right starting point, and a line failing below the foundation is covered on our slab leak repair page. For step-by-step guidance on the first ten minutes, read what to do when a pipe bursts, or call for service now.
Shut the water off at the meter box by the curb or at the main valve if you can reach it safely, move anything valuable off wet flooring and keep people away from water near outlets or appliances. Do not try to open a pressurized pipe yourself. Then call Dallas 24 Hour Plumber to be connected with an independent plumber.
The pipe material, how deeply it is buried in the structure and how much has to be opened up to reach it. A split under a sink is a short job; a line inside a slab or a second-floor wall is not. Ask the independent plumber for the price once the break is located, and decide before any work begins.
Many burst pipe repairs are handled on the first visit, because the priority is stopping the water and restoring service. Work that goes beyond that, such as replacing a whole corroded run or repairing drywall, is often scheduled separately. Ask the independent plumber which category your repair falls into.
Age and corrosion cause plenty of failures on their own, especially in galvanized lines in older Dallas houses. High pressure, a failed fitting, or a pipe rubbing on a joist for years will all do it too. See the full list of plumbing services if you are not sure which problem you have.
