Clearing the jam and testing power
Isolating the power, freeing whatever has locked the grinding plate, then checking the reset and the switch so you know whether the motor survived or the unit tripped for a reason.
A disposal that hums, jams or drips into the cabinet below is a small job that turns into a wet one if it is left. Dallas 24 Hour Plumber clears the jam, traces where the water is escaping and tells you honestly whether the unit is worth repairing or has reached the end.
One thing first, because it matters: never put a hand into the chamber, and never clear a jam with the wall switch live. Turn the disposal off at the switch and, if you can do it safely, cut the breaker for that circuit before anyone reaches near the opening. Everything else can wait for a plumber.

A humming unit and a dripping unit are two different jobs, so the visit starts by working out which one you have.
Isolating the power, freeing whatever has locked the grinding plate, then checking the reset and the switch so you know whether the motor survived or the unit tripped for a reason.
Water under a sink comes from the flange at the top, the discharge tube, the dishwasher hose connection or the body of the unit itself. Each has a different fix, and only one of them means a new disposal.
Reseating a flange or swapping a gasket is a repair. A cracked housing or a burned-out motor is a replacement, fitted and reconnected, with the drain line checked so the old blockage does not come straight back.
Disposals fail in predictable ways. A jam from a bone, a fruit pit, a bottle cap or a stray piece of cutlery is usually recoverable and the unit carries on. A leak from the sink flange or the discharge connection is a seal problem and is worth repairing. A leak coming from the seam of the housing itself means the inside has corroded through, and no sealant fixes that: at that point a replacement is the cheaper answer, because the next leak is days away rather than years.
What goes down the drain decides how often you see us. Coffee grounds, eggshells, rice, pasta, celery strings, onion skins, grease and fibrous peelings are the usual culprits in Dallas kitchens, and grease is the worst of them, because it cools and hardens in the branch line rather than in the disposal. Run cold water while the unit works and keep it running a few seconds after, so the waste is carried past the trap instead of settling in it. If the sink still backs up once the disposal is clear, the problem is in the pipe, not the appliance.
For a line that keeps blocking after the disposal is working, go to drain cleaning. Leaks around the faucet, the basket strainer or the shutoff valves under the same cabinet are covered on our toilet and faucet repair page. The repair-or-replace thinking on this appliance mirrors the one on our water heater repair or replacement comparison, which is worth reading if both are aging at once. Kitchens in the newer subdivisions on our Grand Prairie plumbing page see the same faults, and you can request a visit whenever it suits.
Clearing a jam and resetting a unit is at the small end of a plumbing visit. Replacing a leaking flange or a discharge connection sits above that, and fitting a new disposal depends on the unit you choose and whether the dishwasher line and drain need reworking. Dallas 24 Hour Plumber quotes on site once the cause is known, and nothing is done until you agree to it.
The motor has power but the grinding plate is locked, almost always by something hard that slipped in. Switch it off and leave it: running it while jammed is what burns motors out. Do not reach into the chamber. A plumber frees the obstruction, checks the motor still runs true and tells you whether the unit took damage.
Repair a jam, a leaking flange, a failed gasket or a loose discharge tube. Replace a unit that is leaking from the body, that trips its reset repeatedly, or that is well into its second decade, because the cost of chasing it exceeds the cost of a new one. Dallas 24 Hour Plumber will show you where the water is actually coming from before you decide.
Please do not. Those products sit in the chamber, attack the seals and metal, and make the unit hazardous for whoever opens it next. If the sink is standing full, stop running water into it and call Dallas 24 Hour Plumber. A blocked line under a disposal is a drain job, and it is covered on our drain cleaning page.
Tell us whether it hums, trips or leaks, and whether the sink is draining.
