What to Do When a Pipe Bursts

Turn the Water Off First

Everything else can wait. A supply line under pressure keeps delivering water for as long as it is connected, so the single most useful thing you can do is close a valve. Start with the closest one: most toilets and sinks have a small shutoff on the wall or in the cabinet, and turning it clockwise isolates that fixture alone. If the leak is not at a fixture, go to the main.

In most Dallas homes the main shutoff is at the water meter box set in the parkway between the sidewalk and the street. The lid lifts off, and inside there is a valve that needs a meter key, which is a cheap tool worth owning before you need it. Many houses also have a valve where the supply line enters the building, often near the water heater, in a garage or on an exterior wall. Whichever you use, turn slowly. If a valve will not move, stop. Old valves shear, and a broken main valve is a much larger problem than the leak you started with.

Then Deal With the Electricity

Water and wiring do not mix, and this is where people get hurt. Do not walk through standing water that is near outlets, an electrical panel, a washer, a dryer or a furnace. Do not plug in a shop vacuum or a fan to start drying a room that still has water on the floor. If water is coming through a ceiling light or a fan, treat that circuit as live and dangerous.

If your electrical panel is dry, easy to reach and nowhere near the water, switching off the affected circuit is reasonable. If reaching it means crossing a wet floor, leave it and keep everyone out of the room instead. The same goes for a gas water heater: turning its gas control to off is fine if the control is easy to reach and dry, but if you smell gas at all, leave the building first and call the gas utility from outside.

Limit the Damage You Can Reach Safely

Once the water is off and the electrical risk is handled, you can start protecting things. Move rugs, boxes, electronics and furniture legs off wet flooring. Open cabinet doors under a sink that has been leaking so the cavity can dry. Put towels at doorways to slow water into carpeted rooms. If water is dripping steadily from a ceiling and the drywall is sagging or bulging, stay out from under it, because plaster and drywall holding water come down in one heavy piece rather than gradually.

Write Down What Happened

While you wait, note the details that will help the plumber. What were you doing when it started? Was there a bang, a hiss or nothing at all? Which fixtures still have water and which do not? Did the problem follow a cold night? Photographs of the wet area, the ceiling stain and anything you moved are worth taking now, both for the repair and for any claim you make later.

What Not to Try

Do not attempt to cut, cap or tape a pressurized line. Tape and clamps sold as emergency fixes are for holding a pipe briefly under supervision, not for leaving overnight. Do not remove a section of pipe to look inside it. Do not pour anything down a drain that is backing up at the same time, and do not run appliances to see whether the problem has cleared, because that just adds more water.

Why Pipes Fail in Dallas

Three causes account for most of what we see. Age and corrosion come first, particularly in the galvanized supply lines still present in prewar houses across the city, which narrow and thin from the inside until a pinhole opens. Ground movement comes second: the expansive clay under most of this area swells after rain and shrinks through a dry summer, stressing lines that run through or beneath a slab. The third is freezing. The February 2021 storm broke pipes across North Texas, and the pattern was consistent: attics, garage walls, unheated additions and outside faucets, all places where a run of pipe had never needed insulation before. If a cold snap is what brought you here, ask the plumber to point out the other exposed sections while they are on site, because the ones that survived this time are the candidates for next time.
